Our New Home

Here it is, the post I have been working on all summer and have been promising for some time now. If you are following me on Instagram or Snap Chat you know that we have been building a home here in British Columbia. I have posted numerous stories and some instagram photos for you. I tried to make a post during the process of the build but things were too hectic and trying to sort through photos was not happening. Today I am giving you all the run down on the details of our home build.

(as you can see from this last photo not everything was done when these photos were taken, and here is why)

where is the home: When my grandfather passed away 2 years he left my dad The Fram. The Fram as we say, is the land my dad grew up on and where I spent the first 10 years of my life. There are two 10 acre parcels, one piece has two homes already on it and the other was just a hay field. This land is in the ALR (agriculture land reserve) which means it is protected and can only be developed under specific regulations. Our home is the secondary or the carriage home on the bare 10 acres of hay field. Under the ALR you are allowed one home (of any size) and another carriage home of which is limited to 807 sq feet. Yes, you read that correct, our home is 807 sq feet!

who built it: WE DID! My father is a contractor and he built this home. He designed the layout and details regarding the architecture of the home. We out sourced the framing, electrical, and plumbing other than that we did it all! the painting, the kitchen cabinets, the flooring, the bathroom, the tile, you name it. Day after day after day for 4 months and 22 days to be exact. At the time these photos were taken we had not yet totally finished the house, but as of this last Tuesday everything is now complete. A finished post coming soon!

Interior design: This was the funnest part of the process for me. This is where I got my chance to pick what I wanted and since it is technically dad's house and we rent from him everything I wanted had to be approved through him. Compromise was key here.  paint: I wanted all white everything. Did you read where it was 807 sq ft? Yes, getting carried about with colors and designs in a house that small would make it feel smaller, I was going for opposite. I wanted light, bright, and open. White walls, trim and doors were a must. kitchen: I argued my point for white cabinets and my father agreed (excuse me dad, a blogger must have white cabinets... its what we dream of!) the counter top was chosen by my dad and I together. It is a white granite with specs of gray and deep red. (side note of the granite - Stephen and I had to drive 16 hours to pick it up!) We have yet to agree on a back splash for the kitchen and we are currently missing 2 floating shevles on the right of the kichen couter next to the window.  Oh and my FAVORITE part of the kitchen, the single bowl farm sink. I fought for a single bowl (I would have preferred an exposed sink!) but I decided to chose my battles wisely.

(I took a poll on instagram about front door option, went went with this navy/ deep blue. I love it!)

bedrooms: we have two large bedrooms. Sofie's room has a standard closet and the master... which has a large walk in.  The walk in was a non negotiable request I had made. Dad, let's be honest I work with clothes for a living, I NEED a closet to hold them all!

bathroom: Being that most of the house had an all white feel we carried it over into the bathroom with white subway tiles for the shower. My dad suggests we carry the tiles arounds the walls as it makes it easier to clean. Our agreement for having everything white was that we needed to keep it clean, a non negotiable point on his part.

We are so excited to be in our new home. It feels incredible, warm, and full of love since it was built with so much love. It is small and many people think we are crazy! For the time being it is perfect for out little family. Not pictures is our large deck out back and huge carport with stars down to our basement. All these details will be coming in the next home post in a few weeks. We received final inspections from the building inspector this past week. Now time to clean up the tools and decorate fully so I can show you a finished look!

I hope you enjoyed seeing the joinery on Instagram, I will be sure to keep updating more as we get settled!

Happy Weekend!

That's a really tiny home, but honestly all that matters is that it's enough space for your family. And yes, closet size is definitely important to us!
